6 Essential Spring Gardening Tips
Ah, spring! The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and... is that a jungle of weeds where your garden used to be? Spring is the perfect time to give your garden some TLC after a bit of winter neglect. Here's Clarence's 6 essential maintenance tips to whip your garden back into shape.
1. Tidy Up Your Garden Beds
Clear away fallen leaves, branches, and winter debris to give your plants space and oxygen to thrive. Regularly weed your garden beds to prevent competition for nutrients, and refresh the mulch to retain moisture and reduce new weed growth.

2. Prune and Trim
Pruning helps plants grow stronger and maintain their shape. Trim back any dead or damaged branches on shrubs, hedges and trees, and remove dried flowers to encourage new blooms. For overgrown hedges and trees, spring is the perfect time to trim them and bring them back under control.

3. Mow Frequently
If your lawn is overrun with winter grass, one of the most effective ways to regain control is by strengthening it with regular mowing. Aim to mow every 1-2 weeks to encourage thicker, healthier growth. This not only helps keep weeds away, but also boosts your lawn's resilience, ensuring it's well-prepared for the hotter months ahead.

Now is also the perfect time to lower your lawn mower cutting height as this will help remove excess growth and unwanted thatch.

4. Water Efficiently
Now that the winter sprinkler switch-off is over and the rain is becoming less frequent, you need to ensure that you're watering your garden efficiently. Make sure you're watering in the early morning to reduce evaporation and give plants time to absorb the moisture.
5. Fertilise Carefully
After winter, plants benefit from a nutrient boost. Apply a slow-release fertiliser, and add some compost to enrich the soil. Be cautious not to over-fertilise though, as this can damage your plants.
6. Monitor for Pests and Diseases
With warmer weather, comes the increased risk of pests. Check your plants regularly for any bugs or signs of disease. Organic solutions such as neem oil, can help control most types of infestations. Have citrus trees? Don't forget to keep an eye out for Citrus Gall Wasps and remove infested branches immediately.
