How to Control Citrus Gall Wasp

How to Control Citrus Gall Wasp

Citrus Gall Wasp is spreading through Perth, threatening our beloved citrus trees. Here's what you need to know to protect your garden and keep your citrus trees healthy and thriving.

What is Citrus Gall Wasp?

The Citrus Gall Wasp (Bruchophagus fellis) might be tiny, but this native Australian insect can cause big problems for your citrus trees. Found mainly in northern New South Wales and Queensland, these wasps lay their eggs inside tree branches, causing abnormal growths called galls. These galls are hard to spot at first, but they become glaringly obvious as they grow. If left untreated, Citrus Gall Wasp can reduce fruit size, weaken your tree, and decrease overall yields. Over time, severe infestations can lead to branch dieback and even kill the tree.

How do I know if my citrus tree has it?

Early detection can be tricky, but there are some clear signs to look for. The most obvious indicator is the presence of galls on the branches. These are the swollen, lumpy growths where the wasps have laid their eggs. As the larvae develop inside, the galls become more pronounced. If you spot these, it's time to take action!

What do I do if it's infected?

Cut it! The best way to manage Citrus Gall Wasp is through pruning. Sadly, there are no effective chemical treatments for this pest, so get your pruning shears ready! Here’s how Clarence would tackle the problem:

  • Spot the galls: Look for those swollen, lumpy growths on your tree’s branches. These are the galls.
  • Prune the affected branches: Carefully cut off the branches with visible galls. Make sure you prune well below the gall to ensure you get all the larvae and pupae inside.
  • Dispose of pruned branches properly: Don’t leave the pruned branches lying around! The larvae can still emerge from these galls. Seal the pruned branches in a plastic bag and leave it in the sun for a few weeks.
  • Monitor and repeat: Keep an eye on your tree for new galls. Regular monitoring and timely pruning are key to managing this pest effectively.

    Prevention Tips

While pruning is crucial for controlling an existing infestation, prevention is just as important. Here are some tips to help you keep Citrus Gall Wasp away:

    • Regular inspections: Check your citrus trees frequently, especially during the growing season.
    • Healthy trees: Keep your trees healthy with proper watering, fertilising, and mulching. A healthy tree is more resilient to pests.
    • Beneficial insects: Encourage beneficial insects that prey on wasps by planting a variety of flowers in your garden.

    Stay vigilant!

    Clarence xx
