Help WA Save 5 Billion Litres of Water
The much needed wet weather has come hard and fast. And just in time, because this is your friendly reminder to switch off your sprinklers. The Winter Sprinkler Switch-off is mandatory every year for all Perth households from 1 June to 31 August.
The importance of switching off
The switch-off has been a permanent water saving initiative lead by Water Corporation since 2010.
With the increasing impacts of climate change, conserving water has never been more crucial. By allowing nature to take the reins this winter, we can help WA save an incredible 5 billion litres of water! Our gardens will remain lush and vibrant, all while saving money and being water-wise.
Winter’s cooler temperatures and lower evaporation rates mean our garden plants require significantly less water. Most lawns also enter a dormant phase, so you can confidently switch off your sprinklers and let the rain nourish your lawn and garden naturally.
Consequences if you don't switch off
Anyone spotted using their sprinklers from 1 June to 31 August will receive a $100 fine. No one likes a dobber, but the environment is serious business. You can report a sprinkler breach at any time by completing the sprinkler breach form.
New gardens
For a new lawn or garden, you need to apply for a watering exemption to use your sprinklers during the Winter Sprinkler Switch-off period. You'll need to meet the conditions applicable to your exemption or be at risk of a fine up to $500.
Stay dry! Clarence xx
