Your Essential Garden Maintenance Checklist
Not everyone has all weekend to spend in the garden... and honestly, you shouldn’t need to. A well-kept garden isn’t about endless hours, it’s about doing the small jobs consistently.
Here’s our simple breakdown of what to tackle and when.
Weekly / Fortnightly
1. Mow lawn
Weekly in summer, every 2-4 weeks in winter. Regular mowing keeps your lawn thick, healthy and helps prevent weeds.
2. Deep watering
In the warmer months, if there's any brown patches on your lawn or some plants and pots that don't have retic, you'll need to give them all a proper soak with the hose.
3. Remove weeds
Pull them while they’re small - a few minutes now saves hours later!
Monthly
1. Hedging
Trim back overgrown shrubs and shape hedges before they get out of hand. Don’t go too hard - just a trim.
2. Deadhead plants
Cut off any dead flowers or crispy leaves to encourage new growth and keep plants looking healthy.
3. Fertilise lawn and plants
Use a quality fertiliser suited to the season. Lawn, citrus and flowering plants usually benefit most.
4. General tidy-up
Rake up fallen leaves and debris so they don't build up.
Quarterly
1. Deep prune and reshape
More substantial pruning of trees, shrubs, and roses.
2. Retic system test
Run each zone and check the coverage. Adjust the spray direction and replace any broken heads if required.
3. Inspect for pests and diseases
Check your plants for bugs and unusual spots. Don’t forget to inspect your citrus trees for gall wasp - early treatment makes a big difference!
Annually
1. Mulch
Spring is the perfect time to mulch. Not only does it look great, mulch also helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
2. Soil improvement
Add compost or soil conditioner to garden beds to keep nutrients balanced.
3. Replace plants
Swap out struggling plants and refresh the garden beds with some seasonal varieties.
