How to Give Your Garden a Spring Refresh
Spring is well and truly here, which means longer days, warmer weather, and a garden that suddenly grows twice as fast!
After the slower months of winter, spring is one of the best times to get your garden back under control and prepare it for the warmer months ahead. A little bit of maintenance now can make a big difference to how your garden looks through summer.
1. Remove All The Weeds
If it feels like the weeds were the only thing that grew over the last four months, you're not alone! While the rest of the garden has been taking a bit of a break, the weeds have been busy filling every available space.
Now that spring is here, it's the perfect time to get stuck in and clear them all out before the rest of the garden really gets going. But make sure to get the roots! Pulling off the tops might make things look better for a few days, but they'll quickly grow back if you leave them behind.
And onion weeds? Don't even get us started... they are the WORST (IYKYK) 💀
2. Give Everything a Tidy-Up
Once the weeds are under control, have a good look around the rest of the garden. Trim back overgrown plants, remove dead growth and tidy up any areas that have become a little neglected.
Clear away fallen leaves and branches, cut back anything that's gotten a little too wild and give garden beds and paths a nice clean.
3. Add Some Fresh Mulch
With the garden beds cleared out, now is the perfect time to add a fresh layer of mulch. Mulch helps suppress new weed growth, retain moisture in the soil and protect your plants as the weather gets warmer.
It also gives garden beds an instant tidy-up and can make a big difference to the overall look of your garden.
4. Give Your Plants Some Attention
As plants start growing again, it's important to assess your garden beds and see what's thriving and what isn't. It can be a good opportunity to replace plants that haven't survived, add some new colour or fill empty spaces with new plants.
Adding compost can also help improve the soil and give plants a good start to the growing season.
5. Get Your Lawn Routine Back
After slowing down over the cooler months, your lawn will now start growing much faster as the weather warms up. If you've been mowing less frequently through winter, it's time to increase the frequency to fortnightly or even weekly as the growth picks up!
Regular mowing isn't just about keeping the lawn looking tidy. Mowing little and often encourages healthier growth, helps keep weeds under control and means you're not having to take too much off each time.
6. Check Your Retic
With watering restrictions now lifted, it's worth giving your retic a quick check before the warmer months really kick in.
Run through each station and make sure your sprinklers are working properly, covering the areas they need to and not watering the footpath more than the garden.
Keep an eye out for blocked or broken sprinklers, leaks and any areas that aren't getting enough water. Sorting these little issues out early can help keep your garden watered properly when the heat arrives.
